Most don’t realize that traditional mattresses and memory foam made in the past few decades contain harmful and sometimes carcinogenic chemicals and compounds. About 90 percent of mattresses contain these materials. Toxic chemicals in mattresses are linked to health issues like poor sleep quality, sleep apnea, sleeping “hot”, asthma, pain, SIDS, and allergic reactions.
If you want to avoid VOCs and other harmful chemicals in a mattress here’s what to look for.
Good Materials to Look For
The materials used in organic mattresses naturally occur in nature and are harvested from the Earth. Unlike traditional mattresses that contain harmful, man made chemicals, organic mattresses are chemical free.
Organic Latex: Did you know latex is an organic compound? Most of the latex we use today is synthetic. They make many organic mattresses with organic latex. Made from rubber tree sap, organic latex is sustainably harvested by removing the fast-growing tree bark. The latex made from the sap is biodegradable and a single rubber tree can make enough sap for organic latex for up to 30 years.
Organic Cotton: When searching for an organic mattress, you will see organic cotton as a material in most of the mattresses. What is the difference between regular and organic cotton? The organic variety is grown without pesticides that can seep into the soil and our bodies. Choosing an organic mattress and organic cotton sheets helps support local farmers and reduces exposure to pesticides which are known carcinogens.
Organic Wool: Wool is used for more than just sweaters. Organic wool mattresses are recommended for allergy sufferers as they do not contain chemicals. Wool is naturally hypoallergenic, resistant to mold, bacteria, mildew, and dust mites.
Organic Cashmere: The soft, natural fiber is finding its way into organic mattresses. Cashmere is combined with alpaca wool for a soft surface and moisture wicking.
Glues and Adhesives: Most mattresses and other products are assembled with glues and adhesives that contain harmful chemicals. These glues admit bothersome odors because of chemicals and can cause respiratory issues. Organic mattresses do not contain glues and adhesives.
Harmful Materials to Watch Out For
It's difficult to know the entire list of materials and the chemical compounds within those materials when purchasing a mattress. Most traditional and non-organic mattresses may contain the following harmful materials.
Boric Acid: This chemical is primarily used as an insecticide or in antiseptic products. Extended exposure to boric acid can cause poisoning and neurological damage, especially in young children. Symptoms of boric acid poisoning include blisters, convulsions, and coma.
Formaldehyde: One of the most common chemicals, the strong-scented formaldehyde is present in household products, adhesives, pressed wood, and embalming fluid. Prolonged exposure to this chemical can cause cancer, neurotoxicity, liver toxicity, and damage to the lymphatic system.
Flame Retardants and Polyurethane: For several decades, all foam-based furniture was coated with flame retardants to prevent household fires. One of the most common is polyurethane memory foam, the primary material in memory foam mattresses of the past. According to the EPA, exposure to polyurethane can cause negative effects like asthma, lung damage, and skin and eye irritation.
Synthetic Latex: Synthetic latex is made using petroleum-based chemicals styrene and butadiene.
The Benefits of Buying an Organic Mattress
Buying an organic mattress is an investment in not only yourself, but in the environment and the health and safety of your family. Like eating organic, sleeping organic provides health and personal benefits. Here are a few benefits of sleeping on an organic mattress.
Most organic mattresses are made with organic latex harvested from rubber trees. Organic latex is recommended for those who suffer from allergies and respiratory issues because the material is mold and dust mite resistant, which are common allergens. Latex is also resistant to bedbugs and fungus. If you wake up with a runny nose and cough, an organic latex mattress can help.
When it comes to organic mattresses, organic latex is king. The versatile material has been made into mattresses since 1931. The sale of latex mattresses declined in the latter part of the twentieth century in favor of more plush mattresses and memory foam. With the push for more organic, durable, and hypoallergenic products, latex mattresses are back.
Another reason organic latex mattresses have hit the market again is durability. It is estimated that an organic latex mattress can last for 40 to 50 years as the material is dense and takes years to break down versus memory foam.
Other Considerations
Sleeping on an organic mattress has many health benefits for you and your family. Less exposure to toxic chemicals and VOCs is proven beneficial, especially for those living in New York City, which is ranked tenth in the United States for smog levels.
When considering an organic mattress, remember that they are an investment in your health and the environment. Overall, organic mattresses cost more than traditional varieties. The initial cost versus the benefits like durability and improved health are worth it. Also, knowing your purchase is environmentally friendly adds to the intrinsic value or buying organic.

My son and I found this store after much research. He needed a bed as his old bed would cause him to roll into the middle. He was an active skateboarder and BMX biker and really needs excellent support for his spine and neck. Valerio was exceptional in his knowledge and tact. He had a great sense of humor and I found him to be genuine. He gave us his cell contact which I had to use to ask a few questions and he responded immediately even over the holiday weekend. I would highly recommend this store and Valerio. My son loves his new Helix Elite mattress and I love the value and service we received. Thank you Valerio and Sleepare!
Valerio made the process of buying a mattress enjoyable and effortless. His extensive knowledge and engaging personality set him apart as the most fun and personable salesperson we've encountered in the mattress industry. Highly recommend visiting this store!
Online reviews are great but trying in person these beds rly helped me choose “my bed”. I ordered new Winkbed Blue Luxe with latex and slept on it for 3 weeks so far but gosh, it did make such a big difference on my sleep! I will update in about 6 months
Had a great experience here with Rory. Got tired of shopping online and looking at reviews online only to still get a mattress I was unhappy with and returned. Found SleePare on google and made my way here from Queens. Rory was extremely helpful and patient. His first recommendation was the one I ultimately ended up purchasing after spending almost an hour here trying all the mattresses. The price also ended up slightly cheaper than the online price from the manufacturers website and included the sleeping bundle the manufacturer was offering for online customers. I can't recommend this place enough. Don't buy blindly based off of all the Youtube reviewers. Come here and try for yourself in a no pressure environment. Thanks again Rory!
Brenda and Kirsten were awesome to work with! They were friendly and knowledgeable making me and my wife's shopping experience top notch. I would highly recommend SleePare to anyone shopping for a matress, :)
Wonderful attentive service. Valerio was kind and patiently explained the pluses and minuses of the mattresses I was interested in. And ultimately he led me to a mattress that I think will be perfect. Thank you!
Sleepare is a store that will give you the opportunity to test several mattresses that are only available on-line. Patrick is very knowledgeable about the characteristics of the different brands and will help guide you through the decision making process.
I recently purchased the Brooklyn Bedding Aurora Firm mattress from Sleepare in NYC, and it has been a game-changer for my sleep quality. I have chronic back pain, and the Aurora's targeted support zones have made a noticeable difference. Fazi helped me choose the right firmness, and after a few weeks of use, I can confidently say l've found my perfect match. The mattress sleeps cool, too, which is a huge plus during the humid NYC summers. Highly recommend both the mattress and the Store !
Rory helped me with the mattresses and was very helpful in explaining the differences between each mattress. I came back and place the order with Valerio and he made sure the shipping process was seamless as possible. He even helped me with the mattress to my car.
I and my partner worked with Fazi and she is the most pleasant to work with. Cannot express how grateful I am to sleep on a new mattress with NO shoulder pain or hip stiffness. We ended up going with Winkbeds Blue and absolutely love it!
Such a cool store and concept. They have huge variety of mattresses but I specifically wanted to try Winkbeds mattresses, they even had new Blue line of Winkbeds which I decided to order. Great visit !
I live in Chicago and bought myself a mattress from Sleepare’s Chicago store and cannot be happier with my purchase! While visiting my son in NY, I made him go to Sleepare’s NYC to upgrade his mattress as well. We were greeted by very friendly staff and Sleepare did not disappoint! Best service, thorough and detailed explanations and best prices!Funny to say, he ended up with the same mattress as I have but a little firmer (Helix Dawn Elite). Definitely recommend visiting Sleepare! 👍
