Fibromyalgia is a complex and at times difficult to understand chronic illness. It is primarily characterized by widespread pain in the muscles and bones, also called musculoskeletal pain, and is usually accompanied by other symptoms like fatigue, memory, or mood issues. While the exact causes of fibromyalgia are unknown, many people tend to begin experiencing symptoms following some kind of physical or psychological trauma, such as an accident, surgery, or prolonged illness. Women are more likely than men to develop fibromyalgia, and tend to experience its symptoms more severely.
