Bear mattresses just might be the coolest mattresses you can buy, in both design and its advanced cooling technology. We all know how important it is to get proper sleep, especially athletes and those who live active lifestyles. Studies show that poor sleep quality and not getting enough sleep are detrimental to athletic performance and recovery.
Lack of sleep in athletes can negatively affect and lead to the following:
The team at Bear has designed an entire line of mattresses around making sure those living an active lifestyle get the proper sleep and recovery their bodies need to keep up with their activities. You don’t have to regularly run hundreds of miles or lift heavy weights to benefit from sleeping on a Bear.
Read on to learn more about Bear mattresses and technology to decide if the Bear is the best mattress for you.
Bear was started in 2014 by a team of athletes with ties to the mattress industry. Since then, the early bed-in-a-box adaptors have created a one-of-a-kind product and gained a loyal following in their market. Since their launch, Bear has further expanded their product line and redesigned their offerings to appeal to a wider audience.
Note that each option is made with an FDA medical device approved Celliant cover. This removable cover is made with natural minerals that absorb your body’s heat to keep you cool. Along with keeping you cool, Celliant takes your body’s heat, converts it into infrared light and emits the light into muscles and tissue that helps improve athletic recovery.
Here’s a rundown of each Bear mattress.
The Bear Hybrid is constructed with memory foam and coils. This five layer mattress contains a dense supportive foam on top of individually wrapped coils for added support and to help maintain proper spine alignment. The Bear Hybrid is a medium-firm mattress with a more traditional feel than the other all-foam Bear mattresses. This mattress ranks 6.1/10 on the firmness scale. The Celliant cover on the Bear Hybrid is a hand-quilted fiber top for a luxurious feel and added bounce.
Bear’s original and most popular product, the Bear mattress is an all foam three layer mattress. This 10 inch memory foam mattress has a contouring hug against the body and a medium-firm firmness level (7.1/10). Bear’s original mattress is the cheapest option out of all the other Bear mattresses, but what it lacks in price, the Bear makes up for in comfort. Made with cooling graphite-gel, responsive transition, and high-density foams, this mattress is perfect for back sleepers and those who want a firmer mattress.
The Bear Pro is also an all memory foam mattress with a medium-firm (6.5/10) firmness rating and is soft enough for those who like a softer feel yet firm enough to support your body. This five layer mattress includes a copper-infused foam layer for adding cooling and antimicrobial properties. Copper is a natural conductor that pulls heat away from the body and helps prevent germ build-up in your mattress. All the foams used in the Bear Pro are CertiPUR-US certified and made without heavy metals or formaldehyde.
The original Bear mattress is a budget mattress that doesn’t sacrifice quality. Bear has made their flagship product available in multiple sizes. Check out the table below for sizes and prices.
Bear’s original mattress is an all foam mattress measuring 10”. This five layer mattress is made with Greenguard Gold Certified and Certi-PUR US Certified foam materials. The top one inch layer of the mattress is a graphite gel memory foam that helps relieve pressure and works with the Celliant cover to help keep you cool. The graphite gel foam provides body contouring to help keep you supported, while Celliant helps with blood oxygenation and circulation for faster muscle recovery.
Underneath the graphite foam and Celliant is a two inch response foam. This layer prevents you from feeling “stuck” in the mattress and aids in response time. With the original Bear mattress, you’ll never get that “stuck and can’t get out of bed feeling”, although the Bear mattress is so comfortable, you might not want to! The responsive foam layer helps you switch sleep positions effortlessly and helps keep your spine aligned.
Lastly, the bottom layers contain a transition foam that helps your body adjust to the mattress’s firmness and prevents discomfort. Transitional foam helps engage different segments of the mattress to accommodate different body types. The bottom layer of the original Bear mattress is a five inch support foam that makes up the strong foundation that Bear is known for. Bear’s high-density foam prevents sagging, meaning your mattress will last much longer.
The original Bear mattress is a medium firm mattress. If you are used to a soft mattress, like a Tempur-pedic, switching to a Bear mattress might take a few weeks to get used to. While this might be uncomfortable, it will be healthier for your spine if you sleep on your back and have a larger body type. If you tend to sleep on your side, you might like a softer mattress. The Bear Hybrid or Bear Pro will be a better and more comfortable fit.
Mattress motion transfer– how a mattress sends and absorbs motion-is not something many consider when purchasing a mattress, but is important if you sleep with a partner. The Bear mattress has excellent motion transfer due to the transition foam. Despite being all foam, this mattress has a subtle bounce that aids in motion transfer. If you sleep with a partner, children, or pets, you can sleep soundly on the original Bear.
Mattresses with edge support are ideal for those who sleep with a partner, and important for smaller sized mattresses. Good edge support prevents one person from rolling into the middle, or off the bed. Bear’s updated model of their original mattress has improved edge support to appeal to a wider variety of customers. Now, it is considered one of all-foam mattresses recommended for great edge support.
Bear mattresses are specially designed for athletes in mind with the FDA-approved Celliant cover. The advanced healing features of Bear mattresses can benefit anyone who suffers from muscle aches and pains.
Athletes from a variety of sports from triathletes to Olympic fencers sleep on Bear mattresses. Every athlete and their sport have different body types that are ideal or peak for that sport, and Bear mattresses can support both lightweight runners and heavier weightlifters.
However, the Bear mattress is not recommended for heavier individuals over 250 pounds. All-foam mattresses can cause heavier people to sink into the mattress, negating the support. Heavier individuals will sleep better on a hybrid or innerspring mattress.
The Bear mattress is one of the top-rated mattresses at SleePare and has gained the praise of experts and real Bear customers.

Bear Mattress is a great medium option for those of you who sleep in multiple positions. The mattress slept cool and with the direct to consumer pricing they also are a good value. The health benefits of the cover may also be something you want to consider.

If you have an active lifestyle and rely on your body to recover from a long run or hard workout at the gym, this is your mattress. It will give you that extra edge for recovery which translates into an extra edge the following day.
I’ve never had much luck with mattresses, they’re either soft and dumpy or hard as rocks. This one is just perfect though. And super impressed that this was such a comfortable sight unseen, without the advantage of testing it out in the store. I feel like Goldilocks (and after I wake up, truly rested, perhaps like Sleeping Beauty)!- Fatima M.
This mattress has changed the way I perceive sleep. I used to just think sleep was just an everyday part of life. But after getting this mattress I came to realize that this is more than just a chore. This is the very part of life that is meant to be enjoyed the most. And I can safely say that every night becomes more enjoyable ever since switching.- Roberto M.
This mattress is perfect for my fiancé and I, who both prefer a slightly firmer bed. We both went through a period of lower back pain with our last (over 10 year old) mattress and that has been completely eliminated with our new Bear mattress! I’m 5’5 and he’s 6’0 and the queen size fits us great with plenty of room. The mattress does not get hot or make us sweaty at night, so that is a major plus. We love our Bear Mattress!-Kara R.
Is the Bear Mattress good?
Yes! The Bear mattress is one of the top-rated mattresses at SleePare. With three different options to choose from, you can find an option to fit your needs.
Can I use the Bear mattress if I’m not an athlete?
While the mattress is specifically designed to help aid in athletic performance and recovery, anyone can enjoy the pain relieving and supportive Bear mattress.
Are Bear mattresses good for side sleepers?
Possibly. Side sleepers tend to benefit from a soft to medium mattress and Bear options might be too firm. If you are a side sleeper and are set on a Bear mattress, we recommend trying the Bear Hybrid or Bear Pro for a softer feel.
Do Bear mattresses need a box spring?
No. Bear mattresses are designed to lay on any hard or flat surface, including a platform bed or even the floor. Bear does not advise using a traditional box spring with their all foam mattresses as the box spring does not provide an even surface area.
Where are Bear mattresses made?
All Bear mattresses are proudly made in the U.S.A.
How firm is the Bear mattress?
The original Bear mattress is a medium firm with a 7.1/10 rating on the mattress firmness measurement scale. This is a higher firmness than some sleepers might be used to. Check out this page to learn more about Bear mattresses and their firmness levels.
How long will a Bear mattress last?
A Bear mattress will last about 8 to 10 years.
