Puffy vs. Tempurpedic Mattress Comparison

If you’re shopping for a foam mattress it’s no wonder you’re trying to decide between a Puffy mattress and the Tempurpedic Cloud Luxe. Both are luxurious foam mattresses made of durable material that conforms to your body. However, they have some minor differences that make it hard to make a choice between the two. In this comparison, we’ll help make the decision easier for you.

  • Price

For a queen-sized mattress a Puffy is $1150 to Tempurpedic’s $3800. If you’re looking for a quality foam mattress without breaking your budget, the Puffy is the mattress for you. It offers a similar sleep experience for a fraction of the cost.

  • Feel

While the Tempurpedic cloud luxe has the traditional memory foam layers and is soft and sinkable, the Puffy’s cooling cloud layer gives it a light and airy feel.

Additionally, the Puffy has a medium firmness while the Tempurpedic cloud luxe is a softer mattress. Depending on the type of sleep surface you like, the choice is yours.

  • Construction

Originally the Puffy mattress had only two layers but after an update it now has three layers, making it a 10-inch thick mattress. The Puffy has a cooling cloud layer, climate comfort foam layer, and a 6-inch layer of dense support foam.

For the Tempurpedic cloud luxe, its construction includes four layers: a TempurES material comfort layer, a TempurHD layer, and 2 layers of material that help to distribute body weight evenly across the mattress.

  • Firmness

Depending on the level of support you are looking for this factor can sway you either way. The Puffy mattress has a medium level firmness rating while the Tempurpedic Cloud Luxe is much softer.

If you’re looking for a mattress that’s firmer you may prefer the Puffy mattress, while those that like to sink into a soft bed will want the Tempurpedic Cloud Luxe.

  • Overall Favorite

We vote the Puffy mattress best overall. At $1150 for a queen mattress, the price is right for most budgets. Our pro score for the Puffy mattress beats out the Tempurpedic Cloud Luxe with a 92 vs 82.

The Puffy mattress’ cooling layers give the mattress a much better sleep experience and the medium level of firmness gives the mattress a wider appeal than the softer sleep given by the Cloud Luxe.

Motion Transfer/Isolation

While the customers found them to be nearly identical in terms of motion transfer and isolation. On each mattress, a glass of water didn’t spill and barely moved when someone moved alongside it; however, the Tempurpedic Cloud Luxe’s glass remained slightly more stable.

What does motion transfer mean for you? The isolation of motion means that when your partner or favorite pet is moving around in the bed, you’ll remain soundly asleep.

A Closer Look at the Puffy

To get a better idea of what a Puffy mattress means for your best night’s sleep, let’s delve deeper into this mattress.

Materials

The Puffy mattress has three layers of foam and comes with a Puffy Cover. The Puffy Cover is stain resistant and only requires a seasonal deep clean (or washing) to keep it fresh.

The Puffy mattress’ first layer is a cooling cloud made from gel-infused non-latex visco polyurethane foam. It is manufactured in a CertiPUR certified manner using a VPF or variable pressure foaming process.

The second layer of a Puffy mattress includes a breathable VPF manufactured polyurethane foam. This layer provides a high-pressure relieving surface that is also deeply resistant to temperature fluctuations.

The final layer of your Puffy mattress is the Firm Core Support Base. This is another non-latex polyurethane foam that is manufactured according to CertiPUR standards using VPF.

Feel and Firmness

While the Puffy mattress only has two transitional layers, the Cooling Cloud and Climate Comfort, when you lay down you don’t feel yourself hitting the base layer.

What you’ll notice the first time you lay down on your Puffy mattress is that instead of the thick, dense memory foam feel, it is more light and airy than a standard memory foam mattress. You will have a comfortable sleep that may be more cloud-like than you’ve ever had.

The Puffy mattress is right in the middle of the soft to firm bed scale. While it’s comfortable, you won’t sink in, and while it’s firm, you will find you get wonderful pressure relief. This bed will provide you with both the support and pressure alleviation you desire.

Sleeping Positions

The Puffy mattress, while good for any sleeping position, is best for a lighter stature sleeper that sleeps on their side. It offers the exact kind of pressure relief needed to give side sleepers a quality sleeping experience.

Warranty

The Puffy mattress comes with a lifetime warranty. The warranty covers three main defects: visible sags and indentations, a defect in the zipper of the cover, and any physical flaw in the cover including stitches unraveling or tearing fabric. None of these things are covered in the event of improper use.

Pros and Cons

To fully understand the cost of purchasing a Puffy mattress, you need to see where they excel and where they fall flat

Pros:

Offers good support

Provides quality breathability and coolness

Great for side sleepers

Offers wonderful motion isolation

Cons:

Not good for heavier people

A Closer Look at the Tempurpedic Cloud Luxe

You want the best sleep of your life, so it’s important to take a good look at the Tempurpedic Cloud Luxe as well.

Materials

The Tempurpedic Cloud Luxe comes with an Easy Fresh Top Cover. This cover zips on and off for washing and has an under layer that wicks moisture away.

The first layer of the Cloud Luxe mattress uses Tempurpedic’s proprietary TempurES material, an extra soft material that adapts to shape, weight, and temperature.

The second layer of the Cloud Luxe is made of TempurHD material. The TempurHD material is another exclusive memory foam that is supposed to not only help the mattress adapt to your body temperature but also spread your weight across the mattress.

On the bottom of the mattress are two layers of Tempurpedic’s base layer to help support the layers above. Unfortunately, Tempurpedic is very elusive about the materials in their mattresses making it hard to know exactly what’s inside.

Feel and Firmness

The Tempurpedic Cloud Luxe is a softer feel mattress. Many sleepers find it takes a long time for the mattress to adjust to their weight. There were also complaints of the heat wrapping their bodies.

Tempurpedic’s Cloud Luxe has the familiar feel of a memory foam mattress. The biggest problem that this mattress has in terms of feel is that it is so soft you can feel like you are sinking into the mattress. The sinking feeling can be a problem for heavier people who will notice that they hit the support layer sooner.

Sleeping Positions

The Cloud Luxe by Tempurpedic is good for average build people who sleep on their backs. The way that the mattress distributes weight, combined with its soft level of firmness, makes it best for back sleeping.

While the mattress is just okay for stomach sleepers, it seems to allow pressure to build the most on side sleepers, especially those of a heavier stature.

Warranty

Tempurpedic Cloud Luxe mattresses come with a 10-year limited warranty. The warranty covers visible indentations of over 0.75 of an inch, manufacturer defects in the zipper of the cover, and any physical flaw that has led to splitting or cracking of the Tempur material.

Pros and Cons

A Tempurpedic Cloud Luxe may be the mattress for you but that depends upon your needs so let’s look at where they excel and where the mattress sinks.

Pros:

Great pressure relief for back sleepers

Motion isolation is superb

10-year limited warranty

Cons:

Heavier people will sink to the bottom

Temperature control is lacking
