Do Crystals for Sleep Work?

One of the biggest questions when it comes to healing crystals is “do they actually work?”  Healing crystals proponents claim the gemstones can help with sleep, relaxation, meditation, and improving your spirituality by transferring negative energy out of the body. While there’s numerous historical and pop culture claims that this form of alternative medicine is beneficial to a variety of ailments-both psychical and mental. However, science has other ideas.

There have been limited studies conducted on the effectiveness of crystals. One study, conducted by the European Congress of Psychology, interviewed participants to gauge their beliefs about the paranormal and metaphysical. Participants were asked to meditate for five minutes while holding either a genuine quartz crystal or a fake glass crystal.

After meditating, study participants asked questions about their feelings when meditating with the crystals. The real and fake crystals both created similar sensations, and those who scored high on the paranormal-belief questionnaire registered more sensations than those who discounted the paranormal. The physicians revealed prior to the start of the meditation portion of the study they told participants that they might feel vibrations, tingling sensations, or heat from the crystals.

In short, the study concluded that crystals “worked” based on the placebo effect. While science does not support the healing properties of crystals, the overall placebo effect of the crystals does appear to have an effect on those using them.

There is also no scientific evidence that using crystals is harmful to your health. If you are experiencing issues sleeping, it is best to discuss options with your doctor to avoid adverse effects to your health. In the meantime, visit SleePare’s website for more sleep tips.
