When Is the Best Time to Buy a Mattress in 2024?

How do you know when it’s time to buy a new mattress, besides experiencing decreased sleep quality and waking up in pain? If you need a new mattress, you might be experiencing some of the ill effects of sleeping on an old mattress, but you almost might be wondering about the best time of year to make your purchase if you want the best deal.

No matter the quality, a mattress won’t last forever and eventually, you’ll have to buy a new one. Mattress sales are common around holidays and holiday weekends, but there are a few other times that are great to buy that you might not have considered before.

Here, we’ll explore the best—and worst—times of the year to buy a mattress and what kind of deals to expect.

In May

Average Savings: 30% to 50% off

The savvy shopper knows that Memorial Day is a great time for sales on all sorts of products—mattresses included. According to sales and past data, May is the best month to buy a new mattress.

Why? Most manufacturers release their new models and products in June. So in May, merchants clear out inventory to make space for the newest models. This brings a slew of discounts and special offers on formerly full-priced items. If you’re in need of a new mattress and don’t mind waiting, it’s best to buy in May.

On Major Holidays

Major holidays in the United States mean people have more free time to shop, either in stores or online, which is why retailers hold giant promotional sales during these holidays and the days leading up. Not sure when to go shopping for a new mattress? Here’s a list of the best times to go, as well as the average amount of savings to expect.

Black Friday

Average Savings: 10% to 20%

One of the biggest sales of the year for many stores and the largest shopping day of the year, Black Friday, is known as the best time to buy almost anything—mattresses included! In 2020, Black Friday shoppers spent a total of $9 billion on online shopping.

4th of July

Average Savings: 10% to 20%

With more ways to shop than ever, retailers won’t want to miss another chance for a holiday sale. During the July 4th holiday weekend, many mattress retailers will offer sales on their new products released earlier in Spring.

Cyber Monday

Average Savings: 10% to 30%

This new addition to the Thanksgiving holiday weekend and Black Friday is the end of what is now called the Cyber Five, or the five-days from Thanksgiving to Cyber Monday when retailers host their massive sales. If you can’t make it out on Black Friday, luckily, most sales offered during this time will last all weekend.

If you're in the market for a new mattress and can't wait until spring, look for discounts around Thanksgiving.

Labor Day

Average Savings: 10% to 20%

Since most have a 3-day weekend during Labor Day, retailers take advantage of this and offer steep discounts to get shoppers in their stores (and on their websites). Traditionally, Labor Day, which falls on the first Monday of September, is a massive shopping weekend. Most Labor Day sales are announced early, so you’ll have time to plan and budget. The reduced prices are available throughout the three-day weekend.

President’s Day

Average Savings: 10% to 20%

Another three-day weekend for many, President’s Day, in February is another great time for mattress sales. In between Black Friday/Cyber Monday and Memorial Day, mattress sales on President’s Day are a great time for shoppers who missed out on Black Friday sales to get a good deal on a mattress.

In Early Spring (March + April)

Average Savings: 30% and up

While May and Memorial Day are the best time to buy a mattress, some retailers will start marking down their inventory earlier in the spring. Getting a head start on your mattress shopping during this time will ensure that there will be plenty of inventory available before it gets picked over in May.

If you really want to make sure you’ll have options during these massive sales, it’s a good idea to ask your local mattress store or contact an online retailer to see when their inventory is turned over.

Amazon Prime Day (Online Only)

Average Savings: up to 15%

Amazon’s answer to Black Friday, Amazon Prime Day, takes place in the summer months and offers a host of deals on a variety of items, including mattresses. While Prime Day is mainly known for sales on popular electronics, with some digging, you can find good deals on mattresses.

All Year

There is no right or wrong time to purchase a mattress; you'll have a better chance of finding a good deal at certain times of the year. It’s best to purchase a mattress when you need one. Sometimes waiting too long can end up causing yourself harm by sleeping on an unsupportive mattress. If you shop in January, early summer, and early fall, it will be more difficult to get a good deal.

However, if you live near a SleePare showroom, you can always find a great price on the most popular mattresses available today. One of the benefits of shopping at SleePare is that you can test out mattresses in person and get a good deal on the highest-rated and most popular mattresses that are usually only available online. By shopping at SleePare, you get the benefits of testing a mattress in person as well as the option to buy sleep products that are usually available online.

The Worst Time To Buy a Mattress

When you need a new mattress, you need a new mattress! No one wants to be sleeping uncomfortably on an old, poor quality mattress. There really is no right or wrong time to buy a mattress.

If you are serious about saving money when purchasing a new mattress, it’s best to wait until one of the times mentioned here. Because there are few discounts and new products released throughout the summer, early autumn, and early January, you may end up paying full price.

Online Vs. In-Store: Which Is the Best Place to Buy a Mattress

Not sure where to buy a mattress? Here’s a rundown of some pros and cons of buying in-store versus online.

Online

When compared to a brick-and-mortar store, buying a mattress online is typically more cost effective. Online mattress retailers can offer lower prices due to low overhead costs and more competition. The online marketplace offers more opportunities for businesses to enter the market and serve more customers and provide more choices.

Pros

  • Easier to compare options online
  • More opportunities for discounts and special offers
  • Lower prices
  • More options
  • Saves time
  • Options for home delivery, including white glove delivery

Cons

  • Can’t test before buying
  • No in-person help
  • Refunds and returns can be difficult and time consuming
  • You might make a quick decision and regret your purchase

In-Store

If you want a more traditional mattress buying experience and want to test out products before buying, shopping in-store is the best option. While it might cost a little more than buying online, you’ll get the physical experience or testing and touching the mattress as well as help from salespeople.

Pros

  • Try before you buy
  • Trained salespeople can offer you guidance and recommendations
  • Product quality can be judged in person
  • Store policies like returns, refunds, and delivery options are clearly laid out

Cons

  • Some salespeople can be pushy
  • Comparing products can be overwhelming
  • Higher prices than online stores
  • In-store testing can be restricted depending on local policies

Mattress Buying Tips

Once you’ve decided where and when to buy your mattress, here are a few additional tips to help guide you and ensure that you make the best decision.

Compare price and percent off

While a deep discount might be appealing when shopping, you might not get the best deal. For example, a mattress that is on sale for 50% can end up costing more than a lower priced mattress on sale at a lower discount. Make sure to pay attention to this to get the best deal.

Do your research

Knowing what you want when it comes to brands, materials, size, etc., will help you narrow down your choices and make the shopping experience even better. If you aren’t sure where to start, check out our mattress comparison guide to help get you started.

Check warranty, return, and refund information

Sometimes, the mattress you thought you wanted might not end up being the best option for you. Before making a purchase, either online or in-store, make sure to review their warranty, return, and refund policies. Knowing this before buying will give you some assurance.

Set a budget

Even when shopping at certain times of the year to get the best deal, setting a budget is an important step in the mattress buying process. With all the new mattress technology today, new mattresses can get pricey. Set a budget that works best for you (and your wallet). It’s also important to remember that just because a mattress is cheaper doesn’t mean it’s any lower quality or less comfortable than a more expensive mattress.

Start looking ASAP

If you’re planning on buying a new mattress, it’s best to start looking ASAP. Start doing your research on different mattresses and make sure to subscribe to email alerts from your favorite brands and stores to learn about upcoming sales.
