The 10 Best Latex Mattresses 2024

Top-Rated Latex Mattresses

The US latex mattress market size has grown sixfold between the years 2015 and 2018. The upward trend in demand has been attributed to increasing instances of back problems and joint pain that are caused by poor quality mattresses. If this sounds familiar, it’s probably high time you invested in a quality sleep surface. While we realize it wasn’t long ago when you would’ve shrugged off latex mattresses as a luxury option, the latex beds of today genuinely deserve your attention.

Not only are latex mattresses more accessible and popular than ever, but they also offer certain benefits that are only exclusive to them. So if you’re interested in mattresses that rival the conformability and pressure-alleviating properties of memory foam as well as the responsiveness and support of innerspring mattresses, we suggest you continue reading. This article will cover all you need to know about latex mattresses and help you decide if they’re a good fit for you. We’ll first discuss some important aspects you need to consider before buying and follow this up with some of our favorite latex mattresses.

Latex Mattress Buying Considerations

If you’re new to latex mattresses or simply wondering how you can snag the best one according to your sleep preferences and budget, here are some vital considerations to keep in mind.

Types of Latex

1. Organic or Natural Latex

Organic latex is obtained from the sap of the rubber tree (hevea brasiliensis). Organic latex is free from pesticides, fertilizers, and chemicals. It’s grown and processed sustainably. Despite marketing claims, there’s no such thing as a 100% organic mattress as some impurities are bound to creep in. Manufacturers use terms like 100% natural latex, that can confuse and even mislead some consumers. It’s a good idea to make sure your mattress is Global Organic Latex Standard (GOLS) certified. A GOLS certification guarantees your mattress will have at least 95% raw, organic latex and ensures it was manufactured in a sustainable way.

2. Synthetic Latex

Synthetic latex closely imitates the properties of natural latex but is synthesized using various petroleum-based products in a laboratory. Synthetic latex is cheaper and allows for a wider range of firmness levels than natural latex, but is less resilient and prone to deformation over extended use. It’s primarily used together with natural latex in different proprietary blends.

3. Blended Latex

Blended latex combines the natural and synthetic varieties of latex to create an alternative that’s cheaper than the former but more durable than the latter. Each mattress company has its take on blended latex. Most of them offer mattresses with a 60/40 or 70/30 ratio of synthetic to natural latex.

Method of Production

  • The Dunlop Process

First introduced in 1929, the Dunlop process involves the whipping up of the extracted latex sap into a froth. The sap is then filled into a mold and baked inside an oven. After baking, the latex is removed from the mold and washed. The latex produced from this process is denser and more durable than Talalay. Since natural sediments in the latex sink to the bottom of the mold during baking, Dunlop latex tends to be bottom-heavy. Consequently, it’s used in the support layer of a latex mattress.

  • The Talalay Process

The Talalay process is a more modern alternative that was developed during World War 2. It’s similar to the Dunlop process, except the mold is only partially filled with sap. This space is filled up with the latex as it expands inside the vacuum-sealed mold. The mold is then chemically flash-frozen before being baked. Talalay results in a more airy, lighter, and softer latex foam than Dunlop. As a result, Talalay latex is more commonly used as the top comfort layer.

  • Firmness Preferences

The firmness of a mattress indicates how soft or firm it feels. The comfort and support you can derive from a particular firmness level are subjective and largely depend on your body type and sleep position. In general, heavyweight people will prefer a firmer and supportive mattress, whereas more petite sleepers will be inclined towards softer, pressure-relieving sleep surfaces.

Similarly, side sleepers require a softer mattress that helps alleviate pressure from sore hips and shoulders. Back and stomach sleepers will be better off with a firmer mattress that agrees with their lumbar region and keeps their spinal alignment in check. As we indicated in the previous section, Talay latex is usually softer than Dunlop latex. Moreover, organic latex tends to be softer than synthetic and blended varieties.

  • Temperature Regulation

Latex, particularly Talalay latex, is considered by experts and users as one of the coolest and most breathable materials for use in mattresses. By effectively managing excess body heat, latex mattresses provide a more restorative and restful sleep. Natural and Organic latex mattresses also fare better than their synthetic and blended counterparts in this regard. Additionally, many manufacturers also make perforations within their latex layers to further improve airflow and temperature regulation. Thus, latex can be a reliable option if you’re a naturally hot sleeper but prefer the huggable nature of memory foam.

Features for Couples

If you’re planning on sharing your new mattress with a loved one, there are some key aspects you need to consider. Latex foam offers good motion transfer isolation, making it an excellent choice for avoiding nighttime disruptions. This can be very useful if you or your partner frequently toss and turn during the night. However, unlike most materials, latex can isolate motion without making you feel stuck in the bed. Latex beds have a sufficiently bouncy feel that makes them a good choice for sex. Strong edge support means more sleeping real estate for you and your partner. Unfortunately, most all-latex mattresses offer very little edge support, and you’re likely to experience sinkage at the edges. If this is a priority for you, a more supportive latex hybrid is likely the way to go.

Latex Allergies

Although less than 1% of people in the US are allergic to latex, it’s better to be safe than sorry. If you’re one of the unlucky few, direct contact with latex products can trigger your allergy.
The allergy is caused by proteins inherently found in the rubber tree sap from which latex is derived. However, the amount of protein that makes its way into the final product largely depends on how the latex was processed. In fact, the Talalay process, with its multi-step washing procedure, only leaves behind trace amounts of this protein, rendering your mattress virtually allergen-free. So go for Talalay latex if allergies are a major concern for you. We would even recommend that you consult your physician or dermatologist before getting a latex mattress, especially if you’ve never used this material before.

Budget

Latex mattresses are more or less a luxury option and tend to be pricier than their memory foam and innerspring counterparts. However, you’re getting what you paid for, and it’s best to think of latex mattresses as a long-term investment. As you’d expect, organic and natural options are the most expensive among all the latex varieties. If you’re on a tight budget, we’d recommend looking into blended latex mattresses. Moreover, Talalay-processed latex is generally more expensive than Dunlop latex. We’ve already discussed their differences, so be sure to factor these in before buying your next mattress. You can also leverage special promotions to save big on your next purchase. Durability

Given that you’re dishing out at least a $1000 on your latex mattress, it’d be wise to ensure that you’re making a sound investment that’d serve you many years down the road.
Organic and natural all-latex mattresses tend to last longer than most other mattress types. Their lifespans can go up to 10 years and even more if your mattress comes with swappable latex layers. Blended and synthetic latex varieties are not as resilient but can be expected to last around five to six years. Dunlop latex also tends to be more durable than Talalay latex due to its higher density.

In-store Mattress Demo

If you’re fascinated by latex mattresses but have doubts about jumping ship from innerspring or memory foam to latex, an in-store mattress trial should answer all your questions and help you make an informed decision. So head on down to your local mattress showroom and ask them for an in-store mattress trial.
